Tucson Cityscapes

This page represents a slice of my process researching the characterization and development of downtown Tucson, Arizona. I used visual imagery as signposts along my path as I sought to learn about the complex constructed histories of progress and heritage and how these narratives were transmitted to various publics and embodied in the built environment. The following images and excerpted text are drawn from a variety of planning documents, municipal or independently-developed master plans, tourist guides, locally-published homages and photoessays by Tucson citizens, the archives of the Tucson Citizen newspaper and the University of Arizona Special Collections, and critical artworks. Also included are selection of photos I took in November 2015 of several of the same sites within the "historic districts" or "urban core" of Tucson. New, randomly-generated images and texts will appear each time you reload this page, maybe offering a new and strange juxtaposition.
